Biography/History

Born Catherine Maud Julian in Swindon, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England to Samuel and Georgina M. H. Julian. She had at least one brother named Francis. Catherine Maud married Lieutenant William Henry Gerrard Goodlake of the Royal Navy in May 1876. The couple had two children Thomas Julian born in 1877 and Samuel John Gerrard born in 1878. Lieutenant Goodlake died in Hong Kong in 1878. Catherine M. Goodlake moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada with her son Thomas Julian Goodlake where she died in 1930.

Scope and Contents

A leather bound volume comprised of culinary recipes compiled by Catherine Goodlake spanning the years from 1874 to 1901. Culinary recipes include breads, brines, cakes, cheeses, creams, curries, fruits, marmalades, meat dishes, picklings, puddings, and soups. There are several recipes for puddings including cabinet, baked bread, German, imperial, lemon, plum, souffle, and Yorkshire. Cakes are also prominent such as citron, griddle, lemon, Madeira, rock, sand, and sponge. Other recipes of note include anchovy artichokes, brandy morello cherries, frosted potatoes, gingerbread nuts, Indian pickle, mince pies, ox tail soup, risotto di Milano, and syllabub. Many recipes are pasted in the volume and a few sent to Goodlake. There are some recipes from newspapers. Two printed recipes are pasted in: Goodlake's receipt for sausages and Goodlake's receipt for blood puddings. Written in pencil on the inside front cover: Catherine Goodlake [M?] Swindon, Cheltenham. Written on the last fly-leaf: receipts.
