Horace H.F. Jayne was Director of the University Museum from 1929 to 1939 as a part of a distiguished career in the cultural institutions of Philadelphia. The collection consists of twenty boxes of correspondence related to his duties as Director.

Biography/History

Horace H.F. Jayne was born into a prominent Philadelphia family, distinguished in cultural and educational activites in the city in 1898. He attended the DeLancey School and Episcopal Academy, graduating from Harvard College in 1919.

In 1921, Jayne began working at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art where he developed his dedication to the advancement of museum work and the application of museum collections to education. Jayne traveled to China and the East twice, both as a part of expeditions sponsored by the Fogg Museum at Harvard. He became an avid collector of Asian art. In 1925, Jayne was appointed Curator of Oriental Art at the Pennsylvania Museum moving up to Chief of the Division of Eastern Art in 1928. He was the Acting Director of the Museum when he accepted an appointment to the Directorship of the University Museum. Jayne held the directorship until 1939.

Following his tenure at the University Museum, Jayne held positions as Vice Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and as Chief of the China Desk at the Voice of America. He was appointed Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1950.

Jayne continued working until the mid 1960s holding the position of advisory curator at the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts. Jayne's health declined in his last years as a result of a stroke. He continued writing commentary and completed a catalogue of the Oriental collection at the Norton Gallery typing with two fingers of his left hand. Jayne died in 1975.

Scope and Contents

Horace H.F. Jayne was Director of the University Museum from 1929 to 1939 following a distinguished early career as curator, assistant dirctor and director of prestigious Philadelphia art and cultural institutions. He developed an avid interest in Chinese art following expeditions to China with the Fogg Museum and spent much of his life attaining a collection of eastern art.

The Horace H.F. Jayne Administrative Records consist of 20 archival boxes of correspondence spanning the years 1929 to 1943. The records are organized alphabetically and then chronologically. The letters involve his daily work as Director and include issues of administration and budget, expeditions, collections, and buildings among others.
