Scope and Contents

Letterpress copybook housed in a metal copy press comprises the correspondence of George Müller of Germany spanning the years from 1885 to 1890. Copie-Buch No. 1 is printed on a label on the front cover. The letters were written to friends and family during Müller's travels to Hamburg and Hannover, Germany; Tepic, Mexico; San Francisco, California; Tahiti; and Christmas Island. The letters are in German with some in English and French. The copybook contains 964 numbered leaves. Leaves 314 to 964 are blank. Leaf 160 has been torn out and laid in the volume. Four unnumbered leaves are laid in the volume following leaf 312. A tabbed alphabetical index is at the end of the volume. The copybook is housed in a portable copying press made by Friedrich Soennecken a stationer and office supply manufacturer in Bonn, Germany. The hinged iron and steel book-like press has a flat lever closure with a locking mechanism. The copy press weighs approximately eight pounds and was advertised for business, personal, and home use. Labels for F. Soennecken are on the inside front and back covers of the copy press. There is a label on the inside front cover of the copybook.
