Biography/History

Harrison was born November 11, 1892 in India. He served as a Leiutenant in the India Army Reserve in Pakistan. Harrison appears to have lived in British Columbia, Canada occupying himself as a rancher.

Scope and Contents

This oblong spiral bound volume with "Snaps" in gold printed on the front cover comprises a collection of photographs probably kept by a British soldier in Lucknow, India between the years from 1912 to 1918. The album contains 103 snapshots taken chiefly Lucknow, India with some images from Palestine and Egypt. The images depict regiments of soldiers in formation, on foot, and on horseback, military camps, individual soldiers, and cannons. Pictures of landmarks include the Sphinx in Egypt and Jaffa Tower in Palestine. A majority of the scenic images are of sites and monuments in Lucknow including Chota Imambara, Remi Darwaza, the British Residency at Lucknow, and the Cawnpore Memorial Well. There are also images of horses and dogs performing tricks. The volume's green covers are detached.

A photograph album kept by an unidentified British soldier in the Royal Air Force stationed in India during World War II. Spanning approximately one year from 1944 to 1945 the album comprises 330 black-and-white photographs with captions in white ink. The images are of fellow soldiers, military stations, planes, temples, churches, landscapes, local people, and cultural customs. The photographs were taken at several cities in India including Agra, Avadi, Chennai, Kashmir, Lucknow, Mumbai, Port Suez, and Wellington. There are images taken in Pune of Air Force stations with soldiers, bomber, and reconnaissance Mosquito planes. Other military sites include Arkonam, Avadi, and Wellington. Several pages in the volume are dedicated to historical sites in Agra, Kashmir, Lucknow and include sightseeing images of temples, buildings, and people. There are two pages with views of the Taj Mahal. Several pages have a heading at the top: "General scenes of Indian life". The scenes depict beggars, families, dances, festivals, fishing, house boats, historical sites, landscapes, snake charmers, and streetscapes. The years 1944 and 1945 appear on the verso of many of the snapshots. A few photographs in the volume are loose. The green album is housed in a black canvas slipcase. Several pages at the end of the volume are blank.

Comprises 38 black-and-white photographs taken by an unknown British soldier in 1945. The album records the soldier's journey from Italy to Quetta, Pakistan. Photographs taken in Karachi show Man O' War ships. There are street scenes and images of cultural customs such as Mahsud dancers, merchants, and local cooks. There are two images of the British biplane called the Vickers type 56 Victoria dating from December 1928 with the notation "on its way to relieve the Kabul Legation." There are snapshots of soldiers and friends celebrating Christmas and having high tea in Dera Ismail Khan in 1928. On the inside back cover of the volume is written "Sunny memories of Indian days." Some photographs are without captions.

Scope and Contents

Written in white on the cover of this green cloth volume is "W. E. Pringle Harrison in India." The volume contains 100 black-and-white photographs of Harrison's military assignment in British India. The album provides a record of Harrison's service in Pakistan spanning less than a year from late 1918 to mid-1919. There are two photographs mounted in each page measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches with handwritten captions in white ink. A heading on each page indicates a town or district. Harrison was chiefly in the Pakistan districts of Jhelum and Mardān. The photographs record other soldiers, camp sites, local people, customs, landscapes, architectural sites, and animals. Sites include canals, mosques, a bazaar and other places of interest. The images also recorded Harrison's life in British India including fellow soldiers, platoons, sporting events, bungalows, and gardens. Pictures of animals include geese, cows, dogs, and captured alligators. Other photographs captured images of the Khattak Platoon, Gurkhas, and the Depot QR Guard. One page has a picture of an Afghan shell exploding dated May 1919, probably during the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Four photographs are pasted on the inside back cover.

Biography/History

Harrison was born November 11, 1892 in India. He served as a Leiutenant in the India Army Reserve in Pakistan. Harrison appears to have lived in British Columbia, Canada occupying himself as a rancher.

Scope and Contents

This oblong spiral bound volume with "Snaps" in gold printed on the front cover comprises a collection of photographs probably kept by a British soldier in Lucknow, India between the years from 1912 to 1918. The album contains 103 snapshots taken chiefly Lucknow, India with some images from Palestine and Egypt. The images depict regiments of soldiers in formation, on foot, and on horseback, military camps, individual soldiers, and cannons. Pictures of landmarks include the Sphinx in Egypt and Jaffa Tower in Palestine. A majority of the scenic images are of sites and monuments in Lucknow including Chota Imambara, Remi Darwaza, the British Residency at Lucknow, and the Cawnpore Memorial Well. There are also images of horses and dogs performing tricks. The volume's green covers are detached.

There are images taken in Pune of Air Force stations with soldiers, bomber, and reconnaissance Mosquito planes. Other military sites include Arkonam, Avadi, and Wellington. Several pages in the volume are dedicated to historical sites in Agra, Kashmir, Lucknow and include sightseeing images of temples, buildings, and people. There are two pages with views of the Taj Mahal. Several pages have a heading at the top: "General scenes of Indian life". The scenes depict beggars, families, dances, festivals, fishing, house boats, historical sites, landscapes, snake charmers, and streetscapes. The years 1944 and 1945 appear on the verso of many of the snapshots. A few photographs in the volume are loose. The green album is housed in a black canvas slipcase. Several pages at the end of the volume are blank.

There are snapshots of soldiers and friends celebrating Christmas and having high tea in Dera Ismail Khan in 1928. On the inside back cover of the volume is written "Sunny memories of Indian days." Some photographs are without captions.

Written in white on the cover of this green cloth volume is "W. E. Pringle Harrison in India." The volume contains 100 black-and-white photographs of Harrison's military assignment in British India. The album provides a record of Harrison's service in Pakistan spanning less than a year from late 1918 to mid-1919. There are two photographs mounted in each page measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches with handwritten captions in white ink. A heading on each page indicates a town or district. Harrison was chiefly in the Pakistan districts of Jhelum and Mardān. The photographs record other soldiers, camp sites, local people, customs, landscapes, architectural sites, and animals. Sites include canals, mosques, a bazaar and other places of interest. The images also recorded Harrison's life in British India including fellow soldiers, platoons, sporting events, bungalows, and gardens. Pictures of animals include geese, cows, dogs, and captured alligators. Other photographs captured images of the Khattak Platoon, Gurkhas, and the Depot QR Guard. One page has a picture of an Afghan shell exploding dated May 1919, probably during the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Four photographs are pasted on the inside back cover.

Biography/History

Harrison was born November 11, 1892 in India. He served as a Leiutenant in the India Army Reserve in Pakistan. Harrison appears to have lived in British Columbia, Canada occupying himself as a rancher.

Scope and Contents

This oblong spiral bound volume with "Snaps" in gold printed on the front cover comprises a collection of photographs probably kept by a British soldier in Lucknow, India between the years from 1912 to 1918. The album contains 103 snapshots taken chiefly Lucknow, India with some images from Palestine and Egypt. The images depict regiments of soldiers in formation, on foot, and on horseback, military camps, individual soldiers, and cannons. Pictures of landmarks include the Sphinx in Egypt and Jaffa Tower in Palestine. A majority of the scenic images are of sites and monuments in Lucknow including Chota Imambara, Remi Darwaza, the British Residency at Lucknow, and the Cawnpore Memorial Well. There are also images of horses and dogs performing tricks. The volume's green covers are detached.

A photograph album kept by an unidentified British soldier in the Royal Air Force stationed in India during World War II. Spanning approximately one year from 1944 to 1945 the album comprises 330 black-and-white photographs with captions in white ink. The images are of fellow soldiers, military stations, planes, temples, churches, landscapes, local people, and cultural customs. The photographs were taken at several cities in India including Agra, Avadi, Chennai, Kashmir, Lucknow, Mumbai, Port Suez, and Wellington. There are images taken in Pune of Air Force stations with soldiers, bomber, and reconnaissance Mosquito planes. Other military sites include Arkonam, Avadi, and Wellington. Several pages in the volume are dedicated to historical sites in Agra, Kashmir, Lucknow and include sightseeing images of temples, buildings, and people. There are two pages with views of the Taj Mahal. Several pages have a heading at the top: "General scenes of Indian life". The scenes depict beggars, families, dances, festivals, fishing, house boats, historical sites, landscapes, snake charmers, and streetscapes. The years 1944 and 1945 appear on the verso of many of the snapshots. A few photographs in the volume are loose. The green album is housed in a black canvas slipcase. Several pages at the end of the volume are blank.

Comprises 38 black-and-white photographs taken by an unknown British soldier in 1945. The album records the soldier's journey from Italy to Quetta, Pakistan. The photographs are snapshots measuring 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches and capture images of fellow soldiers, landscapes, seascapes (with some warships), and of Quetta. The images of soldiers include men and women in uniform and out uniform and include some social scenes, like swimming at the military training facility in Quetta known as Staff College. Photographs are corner-mounted on black paper with captions in white ink.

The photographs include images of Razmak, Murree, Dera Ismail Khan, Karachi, Manzai, and Quetta. Several photographs taken in Quetta depict sporting events and social gatherings at the military training site called Staff College. There are images of military camps in the city of Razmak. Photographs taken in Karachi show Man O' War ships. There are street scenes and images of cultural customs such as Mahsud dancers, merchants, and local cooks. There are two images of the British biplane called the Vickers type 56 Victoria dating from December 1928 with the notation "on its way to relieve the Kabul Legation." There are snapshots of soldiers and friends celebrating Christmas and having high tea in Dera Ismail Khan in 1928. On the inside back cover of the volume is written "Sunny memories of Indian days." Some photographs are without captions.

Scope and Contents

Written in white on the cover of this green cloth volume is "W. E. Pringle Harrison in India." The volume contains 100 black-and-white photographs of Harrison's military assignment in British India. The album provides a record of Harrison's service in Pakistan spanning less than a year from late 1918 to mid-1919. There are two photographs mounted in each page measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches with handwritten captions in white ink. A heading on each page indicates a town or district. Harrison was chiefly in the Pakistan districts of Jhelum and Mardān. The photographs record other soldiers, camp sites, local people, customs, landscapes, architectural sites, and animals. Sites include canals, mosques, a bazaar and other places of interest. The images also recorded Harrison's life in British India including fellow soldiers, platoons, sporting events, bungalows, and gardens. Pictures of animals include geese, cows, dogs, and captured alligators. Other photographs captured images of the Khattak Platoon, Gurkhas, and the Depot QR Guard.
