Biography/History

Herman Teerink was Dutch scholar who focused his work on Irish satirist Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). In 1937, Teerink published A Bibliography of the Writings in Prose and Verse of Jonathan Swift, a work which "was greeted with rather sharp criticism by the reviewers, who did not impugn the accuracy of the contents but complained of the absence of full bibliographic descriptions, disputed the attribution to Swift of several works which did not belong in the canon, and questioned the organization of the material," (Teerink, page v). As a result, it was determined that a second edition should be written. According to Thomas Yoseloff, director of the University of Pennsylvania Press, the new edition includes "full physical descriptions for all important works and pamphlets, and ... bibliographic findings of Swift scholarship [discovered between 1937 and circa 1963]," Teerink, page vi).

While working on the second edition, Teerink was ill and Professor Arthur H. Scouten, professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania and an author on Swift in his own right, was asked to help Teerink complete the bibliography. Scouten had been instrumental in the University of Pennsylvania's acquisition of Teerink's collection of some 1,800 Jonathan Swift volumes. Teerink died in 1961 before the second edition was published in 1963.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains manuscript notes for the revised edition of Herman Teerink's 1937, A Bibliography of the Writings in Prose and Verse of Jonathan Swift. The revised edition of this book was published after Teerink’s death in 1963 and was titled,  A Bibliography for the Writings of Jonathan Swift. In this collection, there are bibliography revisions of known editions of Jonathan Swift’s work post 1714 and post 1814. There is also an inventory list of all of the works in Swift’s personal collection that marks discrepancies between the total and the number of items the library of the University of Pennsylvania received.

Researchers will find loose handwritten notes as well as handwritten bibliographic notations and printed material cut and pasted onto paper to create a new order in the second edition. There are one or two photocopies of poems and other Swift materials included.
