Scope and Contents
Parchment-bound recipe book written in England by an unnamed author. The recipes compiled in the volume date from approximately 1750 to 1799. The volume is comprised of medicinal and culinary recipes. The first half of the volumes consists of remedies such as salves, plasters, tinctures, and washes for various common ailments including ague, colds, coughs, eye ailments, green sickness, itches, sore throats, sprains, weakness in women, and wounds. A few named recipes are included such as Daffy's elixir, Huxham's tincture of bark, and Dr. Thikland's salve. A few remedies for ailments of horses are included. Culinary recipes include cakes, sauces, picklings, meat dishes, and puddings. Recipes for Hunting beef, preserving whole oranges, and a recipe for orgeats from George's Chocolate house are included. Some recipes are pasted in the volume. Pages throughout the volume are blank. The paper bears the watermark Pro Patria with an image of the Maid of Dort.
