Biography/History

The University of Pennsylvania Fund was founded on October 27, 1924 as "the medium through which the financial problems of the institution will be solved" ("What Should I Give?" p. 3, Box 1 Folder 4). While at the time it was fourth in enrollment and size of faculty among American universities, it was 21st in amount of productive endowment, leading to wage stagnation, difficulties in building upkeep, and a severe lag on necessary expansions of facilities and services for the growing student population ("The Girard Letter" pp. 6-7, Box 1 Folder 5). The Fund's first task was to formulate a program of policy and needs, which determined that the University would need to raise $45,650,000 over its first 15 years. The materials in this collection include informational and promotional material relating to the University of Pennsylvania Fund's fundraising effort over its first two years.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains informational and promotional material including booklets, newsletters, donation forms, programs, fliers, and newspaper clippings relating to the accomplishments and needs of the University of Pennsylvania Fund between 1924 and 1926. The majority of the material dates from 1925. Materials in Box 1 Folder 1 appear to be largely intended for University of Pennsylvania alumni as well as University of Pennsylvania Fund volunteers, who are called "Class Committeemen and Workers." The remaining material is largely informational and promotional, and notably includes several copies of The University of Pennsylvania: Past, Present, and Future, a booklet which contains the first Program of Policy and Needs of the University of Pennsylvania Fund.
