Scope and Contents

An album of twenty-four leaves bound in a green cloth cover, decorated with a gold and black design, and embossed with the title Scraps. This herbarium by an unknown collector was probably created in the 1860s. The album comprises thirteen leaves of seaweed specimens collected at Torquay, England. There are six pages of unidentified leaf specimens from ferns and trees. The last nine leaves have eighteen printed botanical color plates mounted two per leaf measuring 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Each seaweed specimen in the herbarium has been mounted on white paper, glued in the volume, and the name for each written on the bottom left-hand corner. The seaweed specimens have various leafy shapes and have retained some of their vibrant color with examples in magenta, purple, green, and brown. The botanical leaf specimens have been mounted directly onto the pages in the album. The botanical color prints have illustrations of flowering plants and ferns. There are four postcards mounted in the album with reproductions of water color landscapes by T. L. Rowbotham. Laid in the album is a skeletal specimen of a flyingfish wing (fin) mounted on paper with the notation "captured in Oct. 1861" written in pencil.
