Dr. Irving Stein (1906-2000) was an orthopedic surgeon and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who also served on
the board of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This collection documents his relationship with Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), the conductor
of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and his efforts to memorialize Ormandy's accomplishments following his death.

Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), was a violinist and conductor, best known for his 44-year association with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
This collection consists of 663 sound recordings, largely of classical music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted
by Eugene Ormandy. The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by composer, or occasionally by the title of the recording
when multiple composers or a themed recording was created.

Herman Goldner (1891-1982) was a businessman of Jewish origins belonging to a musical family from Vienna, Austria. This collection
of music programs and ephemera includes more than 400 programs from Vienna (bulk), England, France, Germany, and the United
States, as well as about 70 admission ticket stubs, and a small number of clippings and publications.

Donald Grout, Lewis Lockwood, James Haar, Martin Picker, Don Randel, Lawrence Bernstein, Nicholas Temperley, Ellen Rosand,
and Richard Kramer are also well represented.

Leopold Anthony Stokowski was born April 18, 1882 in London and become one of the best-known conductors of the 20th century.
Stokowski conducted symphony orchestras across the world from 1909 until his death in 1977. This collection consists of original
sound recordings on sound reels, audio cassettes, cds, and long playing records. It is believed that the majority document
Stokowski's conducting career from 1917 to 1977 and that very few were professional recordings. Original sound recordings
are restricted from use and researchers wishing to obtain a copy of the original will be financially responsible for the reformatting
costs.

Alma, such as diaries and memoirs, as well as her musical compositions; writings of Werfel, such as poems, plays, novels,
novellas and stories, and essays; memorabilia relating to Alma, her parents, Gustav Mahler, and Werfel, such as clippings,

The Marlboro Music School and Festival Records spans Marlboro’s history from 1950 through 2013 and showcases its influence
on chamber music in America as it documents its growth from a small and informally organized summer school in the early 1950s
to its current status as a prestigious institution that has shaped careers and inspired the formation of numerous renowned
ensembles. The school's emphasis is on the intensive study of chamber music where young and senior professionals collaborate
in a relaxed atmosphere that is removed from the demanding rehearsal and performance schedules that they face throughout the
year. The collection comprises administrative documents, concert programs, printed promotional materials, articles and reviews,
photographs, and audio-visual materials relating to the Marlboro School of Music and annual summer festival as well as the
related Musicians from Marlboro touring series and the Marlboro Recording Society.

Much of the unusual and complicated history of Max Bruch's Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, op. 88a, may be traced through
this collection of music manuscripts. The collection consists primarily of full orchestral scores, duo piano parts, orchestral
parts, and supplementary material for the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, op. 88a, by Max Bruch. Also some unrelated
transcriptions and arrangements. All materials are in manuscript. These materials were heavily altered and used for performance
between 1915 and 1917 by duo pianists Rose and Ottilie Sutro. Subsequently, they were collected by pianist Nathan Twining
from the auction of the effects of pianist Ottilie Sutro in Baltimore, MD, in 1971, and used in his reconstruction of the
piece. Also included are orchestral parts prepared by Twining for his recording of the Concerto with pianist Martin Berkofsky
and the London Symphony Orchestra released in 1974.

Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991) was a pianist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Beethoven interpreters of the 20th century.
He was the director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1968 to 1976 and founded the Marlboro School of
Music in Vermont. James H. Heineman was the director of the the Heineman Foundation from the mid 1960s through the 1980s and
was a donor to the Marlboro School of Music and Festival. This collection contains correspondence, ephemera, and newspaper
clippings. The correspondence is between Rudolf "Rudi" Serkin, Irene Serkin and James "Jimmy" H. Heineman and dates from 1948
to 1991.

Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991) was an American classical pianist known as one of the 20th century’s greatest soloists and for fostering
a vibrant culture of chamber music via the Marlboro Music School and Festival. The papers consist mainly of materials collected
by Serkin himself (including his personal correspondence, performance records, papers relating to Marlboro, Curtis Institute
of Music, and the Institute for Young Performing Musicians) as well as a small amount of related material added by his wife
and his biographers.
