University of Pennsylvania Finding Aids

Barbara G. Schutt was a graduate of two Philadelphia institutions: Jefferson Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania. She became renowned as an editor at the Pennsylvania Nurse and the American Journal of Nursing. This collection is comprised of addresses, articles and files which reflect her associations with national and state nurses associations and the American Journal of Nursing.

Claire Fagin is an internationally renowned nursing leader. She was Dean of the School of Nursing of the University of Pennsylvania and interim president of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection includes her personal and professional papers, including correspondence, speeches, publications, photographs, and artifacts.

Dorothy Ann Mereness, R.N., Ed.D., F.A.A.N., was Dean of the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1977 and a pioneer in the development of psychiatric nursing. This collection consists of personal papers and institutional files. The personal papers document Mereness's professional development. Although largely incomplete, the organizational files show the extent of Mereness's involvement in the development of nursing at both regional and national levels.

Florence S. Downs (1925-2005) was nurse scholar, researcher, and educator. She served as Associate Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and established Penn's nursing doctoral program. She later became editor of the journal Nursing Research. These materials include personal and professional correspondence, photographs, publications, and artifacts.

This is an artificial collection of miscellaneous items that came to the Bates Center unsolicited and/or for which provenance is unclear. These individual items are not related to each other by subject, material type, or provenance. Materials may include organizational records, correspondence, personal notebooks, and ephemera.

Theresa Lynch (1896-1994) is remembered as the first Dean of the independent School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. The bulk of this collection is related to the Penn School of Nursing, but also includes personal correspondence, speeches, awards, biographical sketches, and photographs.

This collection contains some of the records of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Development Office. Also included are a set of photographs showing School of Nursing activities and events.
