The papers of architect, artist, author, and Penn alumnus Alfred Bendiner dating from 1938 to 1955, featuring his caricatures and other drawings among some of his other papers. Images of performers in stage productions, concerts, and operas in Philadelphia were created chiefly for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. The caricatures are original pencil drawings, ink drawings, or lithographs with some newspaper clippings.

This oblong, leather-bound sketchbook contains ink drawings by Richard Burn of Lurdenlaw, Kelso, Scotland, and dates from 1831 to 1832. Each page--including the front and back inside covers--are filled with many comical sketches and caricatures, several hunting scenes, some animals, and local Scottish landscapes.

The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection’s portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.
