The Marlboro Music School and Festival Records spans Marlboro’s history from 1950 through 2013 and showcases its influence on chamber music in America as it documents its growth from a small and informally organized summer school in the early 1950s to its current status as a prestigious institution that has shaped careers and inspired the formation of numerous renowned ensembles. The school's emphasis is on the intensive study of chamber music where young and senior professionals collaborate in a relaxed atmosphere that is removed from the demanding rehearsal and performance schedules that they face throughout the year. The collection comprises administrative documents, concert programs, printed promotional materials, articles and reviews, photographs, and audio-visual materials relating to the Marlboro School of Music and annual summer festival as well as the related Musicians from Marlboro touring series and the Marlboro Recording Society.

Reverend Shojo Honda 本田正静 (1929-2015) was a priest of the Shin (Jōdo Shinshū) sect of Buddhism, and a former reference librarian at the Library of Congress in the Asian Division’s Japanese Section. After his death in 2015, Honda’s library was donated to the University of Pennsylvania Libraries by Tamon Honda. Rev. Honda’s collection reflects both his interests and his life’s work, with many books on Buddhist (particularly Shin Buddhist) philosophy and ritual, Indian philosophy and world religions, world history and Japanese local history, Japanese literature, and Sanskrit and English language study. Within many of these books were handwritten notes, correspondence, photocopies, and clippings, mostly serving as bookmarks. In addition to these inserts, the Rev. Honda Shojo Collection includes several folders and boxes of archival and ephemeral material. These disparate materials have been collected and organized as the Rev. Shojo Honda Papers.

Reverend Shojo Honda 本田正静 (1929-2015) was a priest of the Shin (Jōdo Shinshū) sect of Buddhism, and a former reference librarian at the Library of Congress in the Asian Division’s Japanese Section. After his death in 2015, Honda’s library was donated to the University of Pennsylvania Libraries by Tamon Honda. Rev. He was the director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1968 to 1976 and founded the Marlboro School of Music in Vermont. James H. Heineman was the director of the the Heineman Foundation from the mid 1960s through the 1980s and was a donor to the Marlboro School of Music and Festival. The Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers contain, correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, memorabilia, audio-visual material, financial and legal material documenting the private and public life of Sophia and her husband Lewis Mumford. A large majority of this collection is remnants of Lewis Mumford's papers that remained in their house upon his death in 1990 and were finally transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after her death in 1997.

The Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers contain, correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, memorabilia, audio-visual material, financial and legal material documenting the private and public life of Sophia and her husband Lewis Mumford. A large majority of this collection is remnants of Lewis Mumford's papers that remained in their house upon his death in 1990 and were finally transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after her death in 1997.

Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr., was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy during World War II, who went on to serve as the Secretary of the Navy (1957-1959), Secretary of Defense (1959-1961), and Ambassador to China (1976-1977). As a civilian he also pursued a career in investment banking at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company (later J.P. Morgan & Co.). Gates’ personal papers focus largely on his government service, with a small amount of additional personal items. Included are many military and government documents and correspondence with influential politicians--perhaps most notably with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, under who Gates served as both Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense. The collection also includes many clippings and photographs that have been assembled into a remarkable collection of scrapbooks that bring Gates’ service to life.
