University of Pennsylvania Finding Aids

These papers contain notes and other curriculum material used by Loretta Ruggiero, an instructor in public health nursing at Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing during the 1960s-1970s.

This unprocessed collection contains the papers of Magretta Madden Styles (1930-2005), a nurse educator and scholar known for her leadership in nursing education, credentialing and international nursing. These papers document her long career and involvement with the ANA, ANCC, and ICN, as well as the University of Texas, San Antonio, Wayne State University, and the University of California, San Francisco.

Annie Warburton Goodrich is best known for establishing the United States Student Nurse Reserve, more commonly known as the Army School of Nursing, in 1918-1919. She later became the first dean of the Yale University School of Nursing. Her papers include files of organizations with which she associated, biographical material, miscellaneous documents, and photographs. The collection also includes a typed manuscript of Harriett Rose (Berger) Koch's biography, America's Militant Angel.

Adaline Chase was a public health nurse and nurse educator who was instrumental in establishing the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. This collection documents her nursing and education career, along with her professional organization activities and her personal life.

Eleanor Lambertsen was a prominent nurse educator who led the nursing education faculty at both Teachers College, Columbia University and Cornell University/New York Hospital School of Nursing. This collection contains reports of her involvement in national and state-level activities, including the American Medical Association, National Commission for the Study of Nursing and Nursing Education, Nation's Health, and the American Nurses Association, as well as some of her correspondence and personal papers.

Cynthia Capers was the first black graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's nursing doctoral program, and has worked as a nurse, family therapist, consultant, researcher, professor, dean, and special assistant to the provost at the University of Akron. This collection contains some of her papers and records, including biographical information, outlines for courses at the Germantown Dispensary Hospital School, and doctoral program materials from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Archie and Mary Hanlan are known for their writings, educational efforts, and research on thanatology. Archie Hanlan lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for two years before his death in 1973. During his illness, he wrote and taught about the experience of death and caring for the dying. This collection contains papers related to the Hanlans' publications.

Virginia Dunbar was a former Dean of the Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing and Director of the Nursing Service of the Hospital. This small collection contains her personal notes, clippings, correspondence, and other information regarding her time at Cornell University-New York Hospital.

This collection contains some of the professional papers of Barbara Wilcox, a public health nurse. Materials include articles, information on committees, and position papers.

Ellen D. Baer was a prominent history scholar and nursing figure at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing as well as in nursing centers and colleges in New York. This collection documents her nursing career, federally funded nursing courses in oncology and in AIDS, research projects and prolific writing career as well as insight into her personal life.

The Barbara Bates papers include correspondence, writings, photographs, and personal papers that shed light on her career in the medical and nursing history fields, research projects, and personal life.

Rozella M. Schlotfeldt, R.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., was a nurse, educator, author and administrator. She was dean and professor of nursing at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. This collection of her papers includes her addresses, articles, and files, reflecting her association with various academic institutions and professional nursing organizations; her personal correspondence, and photographs.

The Joan E. Lynaugh papers include correspondence, writings, research from various projects as well as personal and professional photographs. In addition this collection contains activities related to the University of Pennsylvania and personal papers that shed light on her career in nursing and nursing history, including her influential research projects.

This collection spans Buhler-Wilkerson’s professional life, documenting her education at Emory, her work while a faculty member and Division Head of the University of Pennsylvania, and her appointment as Director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing. Also included are important correspondence and papers related to her membership with other institutes and associations. Photographs, artifacts and files related to the Center’s projects, including The Nightingale’s Song and RN: The Past, Present, and Future of the Nursing Uniform, are incorporated.

The Lois K. Evans Papers include personal awards, papers and publication during her career, materials related to her tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, research projects and history files, including her studies in reducing restraints as well as her involvement in national associations, which shed light on her influential career that transformed elder care, geriatric mental health education, and national policies.

The Jeanne Quint Benoliel, Papers include personal and professional correspondence, speeches, presentations, and publications she wrote during her career, as well as documents following her active participation in professional organizations such as the International Working Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement. In addition, this collection contains several research grant projects and related field notes and materials, including her influential studies “Exploratory Investigation of Process of Adjustment Following Mastectomy” and “Hospital Personnel, Nursing Care and Dying Patients”, amongst others.

Jo Ann Ashley was a nationally recognized nurse educator and author, best known for her book Hospitals, Paternalism, and the Role of the Nurse. She spoke and wrote prolifically on nursing, health care, and sexism and gender relations. This collection of papers and multimedia items documents Ashley's professional career. It includes correspondence, articles and speeches, and research materials. Also included are some of Ashley's personal papers, including a complete set of her poetry.

Claire Fagin is an internationally renowned nursing leader. She was Dean of the School of Nursing of the University of Pennsylvania and interim president of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection includes her personal and professional papers, including correspondence, speeches, publications, photographs, and artifacts.

Mary Opal Wolanin was a nurse educator and expert in gerontological nursing, especially regarding confusion in the elderly. These papers span Wolanin's professional life, documenting her academic, research and consultation experiences with various associations, institutions as well as awards and nursing recognition received as a nursing leader. The collection is comprised of addresses, articles, papers, and audio-visual tapes.

Florence S. Downs (1925-2005) was nurse scholar, researcher, and educator. She served as Associate Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and established Penn's nursing doctoral program. She later became editor of the journal Nursing Research. These materials include personal and professional correspondence, photographs, publications, and artifacts.

Theresa Lynch (1896-1994) is remembered as the first Dean of the independent School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. The bulk of this collection is related to the Penn School of Nursing, but also includes personal correspondence, speeches, awards, biographical sketches, and photographs.

Doris Schwartz was a nurse educator remembered for her work at Cornell University and Cornell Medical College, as well as her contributions to the University of Pennsylvania's Gerontology Nursing Program. This collection of publications, grants, reports, and personal materials documents Schwartz's scholarly career and her work with many professional nursing organizations. Also included is a series of audio and video tapes containing autobiographical interviews.

Ruth McCorkle is a leader in oncology nursing research and practice. She worked at the University of Pennsylvania as the Director for the Center for Advancing Care in Serious Illness and as Associate Director, Cancer Control at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Comprehensive Center. These papers document McCorkle's education, military service, academic research, and her involvement with professional organizations.

This collection contains personal and professional papers of Betty M. Neuman. The contents include her published and unpublished works, correspondence, and copies of published and unpublished works that were inspired by the Neuman Systems Model.

Dorothy Ann Mereness, R.N., Ed.D., F.A.A.N., was Dean of the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1977 and a pioneer in the development of psychiatric nursing. This collection consists of personal papers and institutional files. The personal papers document Mereness's professional development. Although largely incomplete, the organizational files show the extent of Mereness's involvement in the development of nursing at both regional and national levels.
