It was compiled by Clara and Rudolf Kirk, who were scholars studying Howells, circa 1940-1963. The collection includes essays and reviews written by or about Howells, correspondence and newspaper clippings by or regarding Howells, six scrapbooks about Howells' life and career, and other miscellaneous materials.

Hope Emily Allen (1883–1960) was a medieval scholar best known for the discovery of the Book of Margery Kempe and for her research on Richard Rolle. Earning an undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College and a Ph.D. from Radcliffe, Allen dedicated her entire life to her scholarship, never taking any teaching appointments. The collection consists of photocopies, and film reels of a number of works that Allen used in her research. Additionally there is a small amount of correspondence related to Allen. Researchers interested in the works in this collection should take note that there are no originals, only reproductions.
