"Formed in 1956 for the purpose of restoring Market Square and its historic buildings, Colonial Germantown Inc. took on a broadened membership and scope in 1962 to spearhead the Germantown renewal effort. Stated in its simplest form, [its] objective [was] to make of Germantown an upgraded community of houses, apartments, businesses, industry, and institutions which [would] be second to none in the metropolitan area. Underlying this practical program [were] the principles of preserving our historic heritage and encouraging attractive, modern development. To realize these objectives, the Corporation's role [was] to initiate the necessary public and private programs, to be of assistance in the development and planning of these programs, and to do all within its power to see that these measures [were] actually carried out." (Colonial Germantown Inc.)

In the face of financial insolvency, Colonial Germantown Inc. held its last formal meeting in 1975.
