Established in 1958, the Chestnut Hill Local emerged as a community forum and since has become an award-winning, independent weekly newspaper serving the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill, PA and the surrounding communities of Northwest Philadelphia. The "Chestnut Hill Local" Collection, 1960-1995, consists of photographs taken by photographers of the newspaper, as well as related clippings. It is arranged into two series: "Series I. Portraits/Headshots" and "Series II: Subject files."

Biography/History

"Established in 1958, the Chestnut Hill Local emerged as a community forum and since has become an award-winning, independent weekly newspaper serving the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill, PA and the surrounding communities of Northwest Philadelphia.

"For 50 years the Local has chronicled this section of Philadelphia. [It covers] politics, business and the quality of life. [Its] local aspect offers in-depth coverage of area events. [It publishes] stories about local personalities, life, restaurants, schools, art and cultural happenings in our region. If it's happening in the Northwest, [they] have it. The Local is owned and published by the Chestnut Hill Community Association."

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photographs taken by photographers of the Chestnut Hill Local newspaper, as well as related clippings. It is arranged into two series: Series I. Portraits/Headshots, 1960-1995; and Series II. Subject files. Series I. Portraits/Headshots consists of photographs of people, arranged alphabetically. In Series II. Subject files, photographs are pasted to sheets of paper, along with clippings of the captions that accompanied them in the newspaper. Subjects include particular schools, events, groups of people, neighborhoods, and other topics.
