Biography/History

The unicameral parliament of Mongolia, also called the State Great Khural, was first called to session in 1924. It has 76 seats, most of which are historically filled by members of the Mongolian People’s Party. In 1960, a new constitution was adopted, and in 1990 the first free, democratic, multi-party election in Mongolia was held. At this time, the constitution was changed again and established the State Baga Hural as the highest legislative body.

The president of Mongolia is elected by the citizens after becoming a candidate by being nominated by a political party with representation in the State Great Khural. The title "President of Mongolia" was not adopted until 1990.

Scope and Contents

The 1992 Mongolian parliamentary election material includes candidate descriptions, events lists, "know-how" sheets, posters and typed documents.

The 2012 Mongolian parliamentary election materials include printed material on several of the candidates elected to parliament in 2012, including several items concerning Rinchinnyamyn Amarjargal of the Democratic Party (Ринчиннямын Амаржаргал) and Luvsannyamyn Gantömör of the democratic party (Лувсаннямын Гантөмөр), in addition to Sodnomzunduin Erdene (Содномзундуйн Эрдэнэ) and Luvsangiin Erdenechimeg (Лувсангийн Эрдэнэчимэг). There is one brochure with a map containing the names and pictures of all 76 people elected to parliament in 2012. Finally, there is printed material on several other candidates who do not seem to have been elected. In addition to the printed election materials are several newspapers concerning the election.

The 2013 presidential election brochures include a brochure for both Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj (Цахиагийн Элбэгдорж), the Democratic Party candidate who was elected president, and Badmaanyambuugiin Bat-Erdene (Бадмаанямбуугийн БАТ-ЭРДЭНЭ) the Mongolian People’s Party candidate who was runner up.

This collection primarily documents "the Democratic forces," that is, the range of parties and factions opposed to the Mongolian People's (Revolutionary) Party, which was the ruling Communist-type party from 1924 on, and has generally been dominant in Mongolian electoral politics since 1992.
