Biography/History

Irene Matthews is a nurse historian who spent part of her career researching notable women who served as nurses in the military services.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes the files that Matthews created while researching several women for a proposed publication entitled Dictionary of Early Nurses. These files, arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the nurse, consist of Matthews' correspondence to archivists and manuscript curators, photocopies of official records, general writings and compilations, and some printed material. The files of Harriet Newton Phillips are particularly rich, consisting of four folders of materials on this Civil War nurse who was, reportedly, the first trained nurses in the United States.
