LeRoy Smith, Jr. attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a B.S. in Education from in 1934 and a Masters of Arts Degree in 1943. The collection consists of academic and religious poems written by Smith from his college days throughout the remainder of his life.

Biography/History

LeRoy Smith, Jr. received a B.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1934. He was employed as an Instructor in English in the College while continuing his graduate studies. In 1943 his association with the University of Pennsylvania ended culminating with a Masters of Arts Degree.

Scope and Contents

Academic and religious poems of LeRoy Smith, Jr. from his college days throughout the remainder of his life. There are loose poems as well as collections of poems, the titles of which include: American Constant, Base of Operations, Between Stations, A Certain Kinship, Christ and Satan, A Common Death, Daybook of Egan Fanslau, Despite the Crocodile, The Dog Whistle, Echoes amd Old Cries, The Four Kings, Horatius Redivivus, An Irish Carol and Other Poems, The Mountain of Virtous Pine, Pavane and Other Poems, Pomptonius Redivivus, Songs of the Middle Kingdom, This Was My Country, Thomas on Saturday, The True Significance of Animal Life, and Twelve Days of Christmas. Essays on writing, short stories, and correspondence finish out the collection.

ARRANGEMENT

The LeRoy Smith Papers are organized into three series: Literary Writings, Correspondence, and Miscellaneous. Each series is arranged by topic.
