In 1981, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) appointed Constance A. Holleran as Executive Director. The collection primarily consists of ICN documents, including programs, internal reports, and journals related to Holleran's career. In addition, the collection carries drafts of Holleran’s papers and speeches for various publications and events.

Biography/History

Constance Holleran is a longtime advocate for nurse assocations and groups around the globe. She focused on promoting primary care and nursing education in countries lacking a developed healthcare system.

Born in Manchester, New Hampshire on June 19, 1934, Constance Holleran earned a thorough education in nursing. She received her nursing diploma from Massachusetts General Hospital in 1956, her B.S. from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1958, and her M.S.N. from the Catholic University of America in 1965.

In 1971, she served as Deputy Executive Director for Government Relations at the American Nurses Association in Washington until 1981. She worked with state nurses association and elected groups within the association. She worked on legislation concerning nursing education, research, mental health, health insurance and other areas related to the field of nursing.

In 1981, the International Council of Nurses appointed Holleran as Executive Director. She administered all aspects of the association under the general policy guidance of the Board of Directors. She advocated nurse’s involvement in primary care around the world and forged a stronger relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of ICN documents related to Constance Holleran's career, including programs, internal reports, and journals. In addition, the collection carries drafts of Holleran’s papers and speeches for various publications and events, and it also includes her diary, photographs, personal correspondence, and letters from national institutions.
