Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City’s most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff’s successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store’s focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Biography/History

Founded in 1920 by Frances Steloff, The Gotham Book Mart served as a center for the literary avant garde of New York City and a gateway through which European modernism entered the United States. During its nearly ninety-year tenure as a marketplace for books and ideas, the Gotham was notorious for selling books which were officially banned in the U.S., including Lady Chatterley’s Lover and  Tropic of Cancer. In addition, the shop served as an unofficial literary salon, attracting luminaries such as Christopher Morley, Henry Miller, W.H. Auden , Marianne Moore, Tennessee Williams, John Updike, and Allen Ginsberg (who briefly worked in the store as a clerk). It also served as the home of the James Joyce Society, founded at the Book Mart in 1947. In 1967, Stelof sold the store to Andreas Brown, who continued its literary mission while incorporating his own collecting interests, such as a postcards and antique Christmas ornaments. For most of its life, the Book Mart was located in a building at 41 W. 47th Street, in Manhattan’s Diamond District. After a series of legal battles regarding loans undertaken to buy the building, Brown was forced to sell the original location and lease a building at 16 E. 46th St. After falling behind on the rent at this new location, Brown was evicted, and the inventory was sold by auction.

Biography/History

Frances Steloff was the founder of the Gotham Book Mart and a tireless advocate for avant garde literature. Born in poverty to Russian-Jewish immigrants in Saratoga Springs, NY in 1887, at thirteen she was orphaned and forced to leave school. Adopted by an elderly Boston couple, her life did not improve, and at the age of nineteen she left Boston for New York City, where she worked in the book departments of various department stores before opening the Gotham in 1920. She was one of the founders of the James Joyce Society, and her list of friends comprised a large majority of the American literati of the 20th century. She was also deeply interested in non-Western spiritual practices, including the work of J. Krishnamurti. After selling the Book Mart to Andreas Brown in 1967, Steloff continued to live in an apartment on the third floor, and to work intermittently in the shop itself. She died in 1989 at the age of 101.

Biography/History

Andreas Brown is a rare-book dealer, literary appraiser, and omnivorous collector of Americana who owned and operated the Gotham Book Mart from 1967 to its dissolution in 2007. Born in Coronado, CA, Brown graduated from San Diego State University and attended Stanford Law School before working at the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas and beginning an independent career as a rare book dealer. During trips to New York City, Brown became acquainted with Frances Steloff, and in 1967 he bought the Gotham Book Mart, with the understanding that Steloff would continue to be active in its operation. During his stewardship of the Book Mart, Brown became one of the most prominent American collectors of vintage postcards, curated an annual exhibition of antique Christmas ornaments, and was instrumental in promoting the career of writer/illustrator Edward Gorey. He also undertook extensive research into the genealogy of his and Frances Steloff’s families. However, numerous legal battles, both with fellow booksellers over delinquent payments and with wealthy benefactors over loans accrued to buy the building which housed the Gotham, contributed to the Book Mart’s worsening financial situation and eventual closure.

Series I. Frances Steloff Papers.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains correspondence, biographical records, and financial documents for Frances Steloff, as well as genealogical papers pertaining to her family. As the majority of Steloff’s papers rest at Skidmore College, there are significant gaps here; the bulk of the correspondence comes from after 1970, and does not contain a great deal of literary correspondence. The biographical material contains a few autobiographical sketches, a timeline prepared by Karen LeFevre for a biography of Steloff which was never completed, and several newspaper testimonies. There is also a personal diary from 1949. The correspondence is a lively mix of personal and professional. A large portion consists of legal correspondence, as well as discussions over a proposed Steloff biography. Notable items of interest include correspondence with a young Hélène Cixous (under her married name, Berger) over the publication of a book of Robinson Jeffers’ poems, a series of letters from Katherine Anne Porter, and heated discussions between Steloff and Andreas Brown during the early years of his stewardship. The legal correspondence mostly details the struggle between Steloff and the American Friends of Hebrew University (AFHU) to negotiate the donation/sale of 41 W. 47th St. to Andreas Brown. The genealogical material was compiled by Andreas Brown, and due to poor organization and sometimes inscrutable handwriting it is difficult to decipher; however, the work on Steloff’s family tree may be of interest.

Series II. Andreas Brown Papers.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains correspondence and personal papers from Andreas Brown, the majority from his tenure as owner of the Gotham Book Mart, alongside a significant minority from his time as an independent book dealer and literary appraiser. Because Brown’s personal and professional lives overlapped so significantly, the correspondence combines bookstore business with personal communication, sometimes within the same letter. However, only the financial and legal papers which pertain to Brown personally, as opposed to general bookstore records or Sorer Realty (the legal entity which owned the Gotham Book Mart) are housed within this series; general book store records are housed in Series V. In addition, the papers and correspondence concerning postcard collecting and genealogy have been given their own subseries, because they represent a separate community of interest from Brown’s bookselling pursuits, of concern primary to specialists.

The literary appraisals contain records of appraisals conducted both by Brown and by other appraisers under his auspices. Significant appraisals include Saul Bellow, Truman Capote, Horton Foote, Joyce Carol Oates, and Philip Roth, and Tennessee Williams. The material concerning Williams and Capote also includes information relating to biographies written on both authors.

The genealogical material contains correspondence concerning Brown’s own ancestry, written histories and facsimiles of historical manuscripts, and a large amount of notes in Brown’s own hand. (The handwritten notes are quite difficult to read, and would require familiarity with Brown’s handwriting and a significant time commitment to decipher.)

The postcard collection reflects Brown’s interest in international subjects and vintage photo cards. This subseries also includes an extensive collection of publications from deltiological societies, as well as correspondence related to postcard dealing and Brown’s book on American postcard history, Prairie Fires and Paper Moons. Taken together, this subseries represents a wide panorama of American postcard collecting during the last quarter of the twentieth century.

The subseries containing notes and receipts pertain to Brown’s personal work and travel, separate from the auspices of the Gotham Book Mart, and not specifically related to either postcards or genealogy. It includes documentation for his rental properties in Cornwall, CT, receipts for travel and restaurants, and some health care documentation.

Materials in box 30, folders 9-10 are restricted from access until 2035 because they contain personally identifiable information. Researchers interested in the content of these folders should contact the Kislak Center for further information.

Series III. Gotham Book Mart employee correspondence.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains letters written to and from the staff of the Gotham Book Mart, most notably Philip Lyman, Frances Genovese, and Janet Morgan (although there is a smaller amount of correspondence from Morgan than one might expect, given her role as small press poetry buyer for several decades). This series only contains correspondence which includes more extensive communication than simple orders/invoices; Series V contains all correspondence primarily concerned with orders/invoices.

Series IV. Gotham Book Mart legal documents.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains documentation of various legal disputes and arrangements conducted by Andreas Brown and Frances Steloff under the auspices of the Gotham Book Mart. These include early legal battles over censorship (regarding erotica and the works of Andre Gide), copyrights over various works published by the Book Mart (including works by Patti Smith), disputes over the ownership of 41 W. 47th Street between Steloff and the American Friends of Hebrew University, litigation on the part of several law firms in an effort to extract past-due legal fees from the Book Mart, and a dispute concerning unpaid orders and accusations of plagiarism between Andreas Brown and the bookselling partnership of Jack Fricks and Robert Hines. It also includes loan agreements (and subsequent disputes regarding these agreements) between Brown, Joanne Carson, and longtime employee Philip Lyman. In addition, this series provides documentation of suits by the American Booksellers’ Association against Random House, Barnes and Noble, and Borders, which Andreas Brown participated in, accusing these larger booksellers of unfair collusion over pricing.

Series V. Gotham Book Mart catalogs and sales records.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains records directly related to the Gotham Book Mart catalogue and sales. (Records unrelated to sales are located in Series VII.) It includes a collection of catalogues of titles offered by the store, including the influential We Moderns catalogue that helped shape the canon of literary modernism; correspondence related to orders of general bookstore sales and Edward Gorey materials (of which GBM was the principal dealer for several decades); invoices, transaction records, and financial statements; order forms for books offered by the Book Mart; and want lists for books that Book Mart buyers were interested in purchasing for later resale. While there is a large amount of information contained in this series, it is not a comprehensive financial picture of the store as a whole, only a small but significant slice of the store’s commercial activity.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains notices for events held at the Book Mart, as well as invitation lists for these events. These include iconic literary events, such as a famous stage funeral in celebration of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake; art exhibitions by Andy Warhol and Joe Brainard; poetry readings by Bernadette Mayer and Patti Smith; and spiritualist gatherings in honor of J. Krishnamurti and Lorraine Sinkler. The invitation lists represent the cultural reach of the Book Mart throughout its existence, and include figures such as Susan Sontag, Gordon Lish, and Gay Talese – not to mention several Rockefellers.

Series VII. Other Gotham Book Mart records.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains a variety of records that reflect the day-to-day functioning of the Book Mart but are not directly related to sales. A diverse set of subseries, including guest books, inventories, mailing lists, and internal memos, helps provide a picture of the interactions between the store’s guests and workers. The guest books and mailing lists illustrate the wide cross-section of readers who patronized the store, while the subseries containing articles from newspapers and magazines and other manuscripts mentioning the Gotham Book Mart represents its cultural reach. As with Series V, this series is far from comprehensive, and each of its subseries represents only a part of the store’s social history.

Materials in box 15, folder 28 are restricted from access until 2035 because they contain personally identifiable information. Researchers interested in the content of this folder should contact the Kislak Center for further information.

Series VIII. Gotham Book Mart photographs.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains photographs of the Book Mart itself, its employees, events which took place at the Book Mart, and buildings to which Andreas Brown considered relocating the store during the last two decades of its existence. In the case of some employees, such as Frances Steloff and Phil Lyman, these include photographs of extended family and friends. As with Series V and VII, these photographs do not constitute a complete photographic record of the Book Mart or its staff, and some of the images lack context or identifiers; however, the event photographs, ranging from a famous funeral-themed Finnegans Wake party in 1939 to staff parties from the early 21st century, do provide a sense of how the social network surrounding the store changed over time.

Series IX. Manuscripts and Ephemera kept by the Gotham Book Mart.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains a variety of materials collected by the staff of the Gotham Book Mart, ranging from literary correspondence and manuscripts to photographs, broadsides, and historical material. While the exact provenance of some of the material cannot be established, based on Andreas Brown’s wide-ranging interest in collectibles it can be assumed that the majority of the material was intended for eventual sale. This is especially clear in the case of the literary manuscripts, many of which are priced for sale, but less clear in the case of historical material, photographs, and broadsides. In addition, there is a subseries of material related to the New York City literary scene that the Book Mart collected over the years, not expressly for sale, from 1930 to the early 2000s. The subseries of yearbooks, scrapbooks, and collectibles contains a wide array of materials, from high school yearbooks to histories of Russian perfume factories and engraved wooden boxes, the provenance of which is uncertain, but which may have historical or cultural value.
