Notes: |
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Jeremiah, xliv: 8.)--'In that ye provoke me unto
wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell.' It
has been characteristic of Egypt in all ages to burn incense unto other gods than the true God. The festival of the Mah 'Mal
is perhaps the best illustration we could have of the recent form of idolatry in this land so intimately connected with the
Israelites, and from whom God's peculiar people seemed to have learned most of the erroneous forms of religion which brought
upon them the judgments of Jehovah. The Mah 'Mal is a litter, built of wood in pyramidal form, and is hung by embroidered
fabrics. These hangings or coverings accompany the litter in the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and are intended for the interior
sanctuary of the Mosque at that holy Moslem city." See 5338BAI/LVii64CAJS (Voyager # 361586)
