This collection includes drafts, notes, and source material by the author, children?s librarian, and professional storyteller Barbara Baumgartner, for her book Crocodile! Crocodile! Stories Told Around the World (1994). The collection also includes correspondence between Baumgartner and her literary agent, and puppets used in the performance of one of the folktales.

Biography/History

Barbara Baumgartner was born September 9, 1939, in Wilmington, Delaware, and spent most of her life in the Philadelphia area. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1961 and received her library degree from Drexel University in 1968. After working for years as a children?s librarian at the Free Library of Philadelphia, she pursued a Ph.D. in Storytelling and Education from the Union Institute. She taught courses on children?s literature and conducts storytelling workshops around the area. A member of the National Storytelling Association and a founder of the local Patchwork Storytelling Guild, Baumgartner focuses on folktales from world cultures. Her first book, Crocodile! Crocodile! Stories Told Around the World (1994), was illustrated by Judith Moffatt. She has published three other books of stories and folktales:  Good as Gold (1998),  The Gingerbread Man (1998), and  All My Shining Silver (2000).

Scope and Contents

The Barbara Baumgartner papers include correspondence, manuscript drafts, source material, and typescripts relating to Crocodile! Crocodile! Stories Told Around the World (1994). Illustrated by Judith Moffatt, the book is a collection of international folktales that Baumgartner performed as a storyteller. The collection also includes the script and puppets used in performing the folktale ?The Grateful Snake," which appears in  Crocodile! Crocodile!.
