Lucy Powel, a resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania, was a teacher and avid short story writer. The Lucy Powel papers, 1928-1977, consist of manuscripts for short stories and articles by Powell, with accompanying editorial correspondence, invitations, and miscellaneous papers.

Biography/History

Lucy Powel (1892-1977), daughter of William Powel and Mary Florence (Burgin) Rodenbaugh Powel, was a resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania. She was a graduate of Friends Select School and the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. Following World War I, Powel served as a missionary teacher in India for the Women's Union Missionary Society of America, as well as with the Luthinia Christian Medical College in the Punjab (the first women's medical college in India). She worked with the American Red Cross for most of her life. She was active in the Norristown Garden Club, the Historical Society of Montgomery County, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, among other clubs. Powel was an avid short story writer, and many of her stories were published in local periodicals.
