Biography/History

Limerick Township, in what is now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was incorporated in 1726. It originally included the river crossing community of Royersford (established as a separate borough in 1879). In 1777, George Washington passed through the area, staying at the Mordecai Evans house in Linfield in 1777. In the 1810s, its population surpassed 1,000 people and its first permanent church edifice, the Limerick Union Church (hosting the Lutheran and Reformed (UCC) denominations), was dedicated. Limerick's first public school district was formed in 1852. In 1866, the first major industrial presence in Limerick Township, March, Sisler & Co., moved its factory to the area. Later significant factories in the area included the Kinsey Distillery and the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant.

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of various materials (mostly secondary) compiled by the Limerick Township Historical Society relating to local history. The collection is arranged into five groupings: local history, general ("topical") information, other local historical societies, Limerick Township schools, and deeds.

The first grouping, local history, is arranged alphabetically and contains information relating to local churches, cemeteries, businesses, clubs and societies, area historic sites, and events. The materials in this collection include deeds, newspaper clippings, photocopies of scholarly articles, photocopies of primary source materials, photographs, magazines, and maps.

The second grouping, general ("topical") information files, relate to areas of interest to the historical society. These include significant individuals (e.g. Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln), events (e.g. U.S. Bicentennial, Civil War), the Pennsylvania Dutch, Pennsylvania covered bridges, and non-Limerick organizations (Pottstown High School, Soup Society of Philadelphia, etc).

The third grouping, other local historical societies, includes brochures, mailings, newsletters, and clippings.

The fourth grouping, Limerick Township schools, is roughly organized in alphabetical order by school. The materials include reproduction photographs with some originals of class photos and school buildings. There are also documents from school reunions that took place at the Limerick Township Historical Society.

The deeds in the collection are of local properties and range in date from 1783 to 1994. Some are originals and some are copies. The deeds have been abstracted and indexed by grantor and grantee in an on-site inventory.

Processing Information Note

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of a pilot project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Limerick Township Historical Society directly for more information.
