Alexander Cox Chadwick Jr. (1890-1957) was a newspaper editor in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The A. C. Chadwick Jr. papers, 1900-1937, contains 73 scrapbooks on local history that are organized by subject. There are also a small number of scrapbooks containing personal and business correspondence of Chadwick's, and a sketch book featuring many drawings of Wissahickon park (1927).

Biography/History

Alexander Cox Chadwick Jr. (1890-1957) was a newspaper editor in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chadwick married Elizabeth Wilson Walker (1892-1930) in 1910 and the couple had four children. Chadwick married Sarah Francis Foyle in 1951. He was editor of the Roxborough Times and, later, the  Suburban Press newspapers which served Philadelphia's northwestern communities.

Scope and Contents

There are 73 scrapbooks in this collection, organized by subject. The scrapbooks are primarily composed of newspaper clippings, but also include research notes, document transcriptions, and some original photographs and correspondence. The topics relate to areas nearby to East Falls, such as the Falls of Schuylkill, Wissahickon Valley, the 21st Ward, and Lower Merion Township; local transportation, politics, sports, and other general topics; and organizations, including Old Academy. There are several scrapbooks of business and personal letters to Chadwick, circa 1933-1937. There is also a sketch book including many drawings of Wissahickon park, 1927.

A subject index to the Chadwick Papers is available on-site. The scrapbooks are currently being scanned, and publicly accessible copies will be deposited at the Falls of Schuylkill Library.
