Sarah Reidell is the Margy Meyerson Head of Conservation in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries where she supervises and manages the activities and staff within the new Steven Miller Conservation Laboratory. A conservator of rare books, paper, and parchment, she is responsible for the care and treatment of the special collections, consisting of about 300,000 rare books and 15,000 linear feet of manuscripts. Working with the MacDonald Curator of Preservation and other Library staff, she is developing and implementing a new conservation program for the long-term sustainability of the Libraries' special collections holdings. Sarah came to Penn in July 2016 from the New York Public Library where for ten years she was the Associate Conservator for Rare Books and Paper in the Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory. From 2003-2006 she held an appointment as the Conservator for Special Collections at Harvard University Library's Weissman Preservation Center. At Harvard, Sarah was the lead conservator on a number of complex conservation initiatives in association with special collections digitization projects for the Harvard Library Digital Initiative ("MCZ Ernst Mayr Library Artwork Collection", "Ruebel Asiatic Research Collection Chinese Rubbings", "Russian Theatrical Designs in the Harvard Theatre Collection") and Open Collections Projects ("Women Working"). In 2002 she was the Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Fellow in Book Conservation at the non-profit Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. Sarah holds an MLIS and Certificate in Advanced Studies in Conservation from the University of Texas and a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) from Bryn Mawr College. Recently nominated by her peers to Fellow status within The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), Sarah serves as the AIC Publications Committee Chair and has held other elected positions within the Book and Paper Group specialization. She has also lectured and led hands-on professional development workshops for conservators at leading national cultural institutions on areas of technical expertise and conservation practice.
