Dr. Douglas Macfarlan (1887-1966) was a resident of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and a physician. He was also an avid local historian who served as president of the Lower Merion Historical Society, and contributed articles and drawings to Main Line Times in addition to publishing several historical monographs. The Notes and Drawings by Dr. Douglas Macfarlan, 1937-1964, consist of research notes, newspaper clippings, copies of articles, and original and copied photographs for various historical monographs by Macfarlan.

Biography/History

Dr. Douglas Macfarlan (1887-1966) was a resident of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and a physician. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, he served in the Medical Corp during World War I before he set up a practice specializing in ear, nose, and throat diseases. Macfarlan was also an avid local historian who served as president of the Lower Merion Historical Society, and contributed articles and drawings to Main Line Times in addition to publishing several historical monographs.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of research notes, newspaper clippings, copies of articles, and original and copied photographs for various historical monographs by Macfarlan. The collection is divided into two binders. The first is titled "Notes and Drawings by Dr. Douglas Macfarlan of The Main Line in the Early Days and  The Mills of Mill Creek"; the second is titled "Notes and Drawings of Dr. Douglas Macfarlan of Valley Forge and the Revolutionary War." Additional drawings by Macfarlan are located in the Lower Merion Historical Society vertical files.
