The Nether Providence Township Council of Republican Women, a local branch of the Pennsylvania Federation of Republican Women, was founded in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1963 and disbanded in 2005. The purposes of the organization were to promote the Republican Party and its candidates as well as to advance women in political knowledge and political activity. The bulk of the Nether Providence Council of Republican Women records, 1963-2005, is scrapbooks; also included are administrative and financial records, membership materials, event planning materials, newsletters, and framed certificates and awards.

Biography/History

The Nether Providence Township Council of Republican Women, a local branch of the Pennsylvania Federation of Republican Women, was founded in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1963. Instrumental in the founding of the local group was Agnes Park Sweeny (1888-1978), a social worker by profession and a committeewoman in the second ward of Nether Providence Township for 25 years. The Nether Providence Township Council of Republican Women disbanded in 2005.

The stated mission of the Pennsylvania Federation of Republican Women, also known as the Pennsylvania Council of Republican Women, as of 2014 is "to support and strengthen the Republican Party as well as to advance women in political knowledge and political activity through networking with Republican Party leaders at the local, county, state and national level." The Federation is comprised of local councils across the state. Organized in 1923, it is still active as of 2014 from its office in Harrisburg, PA.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of this collection is scrapbooks; also included are administrative and financial records, membership materials, event planning materials, newsletters, and framed certificates and awards.

The scrapbooks, organized chronologically from 1971 to 2005, consist of photographs, clippings, programs, invitations, meeting schedules, and ephemera. Administrative records include minute books spanning the life of the organization, 1963-2006; by-laws; correspondence, including correspondence with elected officials relating to issues of interest to the group; and various other files. Financial records consist mainly of financial ledgers from 1963 to 2000 and banking. In addition to a membership address book, which lists addresses and years active for each member, there are annual membership and officer lists in the administrative files. Documenting the activities of the Council, there are event planning materials, press releases, programs from Council events as well as Pennsylvania Federation conventions, and newsletters. Various framed certificates and awards round out the collection.
