1840-1963
Creator:
Birkinbine, John, 1844-1915
Extent: 75 linear feet (75 linear feet (79 box of records + photographs + maps and drawings + pamphlets + patents and realia))
The Birkinbine Engineering Company got its start through Henry P. M. Birkinbine. His son, John, gained early engineering experience through various water supply projects in and around Philadelphia; this experience later helped direct the Birkinbine Engineering Company?s involvement in many water-related projects around the country in the late 19th century as part of the improved public sanitation initiatives. The Birkinbine firm also specialized in mining engineering, both in the United States and Mexico. John also had a firm grounding in mechanical engineering through his work in the Weimer Machine Works in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. John?s interest in manufacturing pig iron from charcoal, combined with his knowledge of hydraulics, catalyzed his concern for the condition of forests in Pennsylvania and he became one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. He also was president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, founding member and secretary of the United States Association of Charcoal Iron Workers (as well as long-time editor of its journal), and served as an iron ore expert with the United States Geological Survey. The Birkinbine Engineering Company records houses the company?s business records as well as the Birkinbine family?s personal materials. This collection, dating from circa 1850 to 1950s, with the bulk dates of 1870 to 1910, consists of printed and graphic materials documenting a variety of company projects ?notably water works and mining ? as well as materials that illustrate the Birkinbine Engineering Company?s professional affiliations. 1873-1888
Creator:
John H. Levering (1831 ? c.1897)
Extent: 1 volume
This folio itemizes an interesting view into the northwestward expansion of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in an era of growth in the mid-19th century. What is shown by the surveying entries is the incorporation, by the 1854 Act of Consolidation, of Roxborough Township and the Borough of Manayunk into the City of Philadelphia's 21st Ward. A list of landowners requiring surveying services reflects on Lehigh University's collection of 18th and 19th century industrial collections with client names such as Wetherill, Packer, Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad and the Schuylkill Navigation System. Also, a surprisingly large list of women landowners is displayed within the ledger entries. (View full finding aid.)

Slater, Willis Appleford
Extent: 1.5 linear feet (3 boxes, 1.5 linear feet + 1 drawer of drawings)
Willis A. Slater Papers contain reports, blueprints, diaries, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks from Slater?s professional career as a civil engineer. These papers, ranging from 1910 to 1937, illustrate his career from graduate student to professor to the National Bureau of Standards and finally to Lehigh University. Much of this collection is made up of testing reports from Slater himself or from companies that he consulted for; and many of these reports were on his specialty, reinforced concrete. The most notable items in this collection are Slater's diary and papers on the Stevenson Creek Dam and the investigation papers from the Knickerbocker Theater disaster. This collection can be used for studying the beginning of the use of reinforced concrete and the building of the Stevenson Creek Dam. The photographs in this collection may also be useful for studying construction, work sites, and labor in the early twentieth century. (View full finding aid.)
