Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full; when I shall smite all them that dwell therein,
then shall they know that I am the Lord.' The prophecy of Ezekiel has been literally fulfilled as far as Egypt is concerned,
against which it was uttered. The Egypt of Ezekiel's day is desolate. To the southeast of the Sphinx there is the large granite
and limestone temple excavated by M. Mariette in 1853. Statues of Chephren, which are now in the Gizeh Museum, were found
in it, and hence it is generally supposed that the Temple of the Sphinx was built by Chephren. It is said to be a good specimen
of the simple style of architecture in vogue among the Egyptians in the time of the ancient Empire. There is a chamber in
this temple in which are hewn in the wall niches which are thought to have been intended as places of deposit for the mummies."
