Rock Upon Which Jesus Leaned
Title:
Rock Upon Which Jesus Leaned [Graphic]
Year:
St. Louis, 1894.
Creator:
Bain, Robert E. M
Object Details:
1 photograph : b&w ; 25.4 x 17.6 cm ( 10 x 7 in).
Notes:
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Matt., xxvi:36.)--'Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.' After rising from this last prayer tired and heart-broken it is thought that Jesus leaned upon the rock illustrated in the above picture for a moment's rest. Standing here and seeing hundreds of Russian pilgrims, nothing I had ever witnessed before was so deeply pathetic as to see those poor people bend and kiss this rock. The truth is that the rock is actually being kissed away by the lips of devoted saints. The greatest wonder of all the ages is the depth of affection in the heart of the human race for Jesus Christ. A wonder great as His divinity is the fact that people worhsip Him, and love Him."
