Title:
The Dead Sea--Where once stood the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah [Graphic]
Year:
St. Louis, 1894.
Creator:

Object Details:
1 photograph : b&w ; 25.4 x 18 cm ( 10 x 7 in).
Notes:
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Luke, xvii:29.)--'But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.' The part of the Dead Sea upon which we look, which is the northern inlet of it, is supposed to occupy the place upon which once stood the celebrated cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Part of the sites of these cities is under the sea and part on the shore. The mountains we see in the distance are the mountains of Judea. We are looking toward the west. To the east of us are the mountains of Moab. Sodom and Gomorrah once stood between the mountains of Judea and the mountains of Moab. The photograph you see was taken just a little after sunrise. The weather here was very hot even as early as that." Copyright year and photographer's name are printed at the bottom of the photograph, along with "Franklin Co Eng-Chi."
