Notes:
Photograph is printed in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Ruth, iv:17.)--'And the women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed; he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.' We give a picture of the entrance to the grotto in the Church of the Nativity to illustrate this particular Scripture, for our Savior was a direct descendant of David, and thus through him related to Ruth, the Moabitish damsel. The door we see above is the opening into the manger where our Savior was born. Steps lead down a dimly-lighted stairway, and crowds of pilgrims from all parts of the world come here to look in upon this sacred place. Treasures are also brought from all parts of the world and deposited here. Lamps of silver and gold are suspended, and there is constantly a light in this place."
