Ionia, built, according to Justin, by the Amazons. Here was the great temple of Diana, the most glorious structure ever applied
to the uses of pagan religion. The temple of Diana was four hundred and twenty-five feet long and two hundred feet broad.
The roof was supported by one hundred and twenty-seven columns sixty feet high, which had been placed there by so many kings.
It took two hundred years to complete the building. This great temple was burnt the night after Alexander the Great was born.
But soon the temple was rebuilt with all its former splendor. There is absolutely nothing here now but ruins. In the above
picture we have what is left of the Forum and Prison of St. Paul."
