Photograph is in a book with a description in French; printed description: "La vallée du Jourdain appelée aujourd'hui El-Ghor; la cavité, se nommait autrefois Araba, la steppe, le désert. Les géologues la regardent comme l'ancien bassin d'une grande mer intérieure; jamais celle-ci n'a été en communication avec la mer Rouge, depuis que le continent a sa forme actuelle. Les hauteurs qui s'étendent au sud de la mer Morte et la dépression de cette dernière rendent l'hypothèse impossible. Par suite de l'évaporation et de la disparition des glaciers, la mer primitive n'est plus demeurée qu'à l'état de deux tronçons: le lac de Tibériade et la mer Morte, réunis entre eux par le Jourdain."
