L'empereur Constantin, pour faire cesser les pratiques idolàtriques dont cet arbre était l'objet, avait construit une église en cet endroit. Du temps de saint Jérome, l'arbre n'existait plus, et sainte Paule, à la fin du IVe siècle, n'en vit plus que les restes. La tradition juive et arabe est unanime pour mettre l''emplacement du chêne d'Abraham au Ramet-el-Khalil."
