Notes: |
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Judges, xvi.)-We give this picture here as an
illustration of the sixteenth chapter of Judges, because it illustrates the Jerusalem road from Jaffa to the Holy City, which
has in all ages been the great highway through the territory that once belonged to the tribe of Dan, whose most famous historical
character, perhaps, was Samson. You observe two of the parties on the camels looking back with a great deal of interest. They
appeared to be very curious in regard to our proceedings. They little dreamed that their pictures were being taken, and that
they would be used in all parts of the English-speaking world to illustrate the Bible, the product of their own land. It is
difficult to comprehend how deeply ignorant the natives of Palestine are. They cannot read, and they have no conception whatever
of the modern world. They are as blank in mind as their ancestors in the days of Abraham." Copyright year and photographer's
name are printed at the bottom of the photograph
