Notes: |
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Deut., i:7)-Reference is made in this verse to
Lebanon, and we give a picture of the great Subeibeh Castle, which stands about three miles above Cæsarea Philippi, at the
foot of Mount Hermon, which belongs to the general Lebanon range. The top of this castle is 2,300 feet above the Mediterranean
Sea and 1,000 feet above the town of Cæsarea Philippi. This is, perhaps, one of the largest castles in the world, and certainly
the most massive fortification in all Syria. It is capable of accommodating a whole army, and stands here by the roadside
overlooking the boundary between Syria and Palestine. Standing on the top of the tower, we are in sight of Dan, which is just
below us, and which marked the northern limit of the Holy Land. This castle is in a state of remarkable preservation, which
is probably owing to the quality of the stone, which is very compact and hard as adamant."
Rounded portion of a stone wall; part of the ruins of the castle
