Notes:
Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "(Deut., ix:1.)--'Hear, O Israel; Thou art to pass over Jordan his day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great, and fenced up to heaven.' We give here a picture of the nat[i]ves crossing the Jordan in a ferry-boat. The manner of crossing illustrated above, however, was totally different from the way the children of Israel crossed that river under the leadership of Joshua. They forded it. There are a great many fords in the river. Dr. George Adam Smith describes the Jordan as a rapid, muddy water with zigzag curves, and the depth varying from ten to twelve feet in the sixty-five miles of descent. The descent is 610 feet from the sea of Galilee and is sometimes over forty feet a mile. Jordan means down-comer."
