__|a  Photograph is in a book with a description beneath ; printed description: "The epistle of the Galatians was written from Rome, and we give as an illustration here the Arch of Constantine, the best preserved of all the arches in Rome. It was erected in 312 A.D., to commemorate the conversion of Constantine to Christianity. The greater part of the ornamentation and the sculpture were brought from a building of Trajan, which stood at the entrance to Trajan's Forum. There are various inscriptions and representations on the arch. One represents Trajan's entry into Rome, another represents Trajan causing poor children to be educated, another represents Trajan addressing the army, and in another Trajan is depicted as condemning a barbarian. So we have here the purpose of the Emperor Constantine embodied and ornamented by heathen sculpture."
