03|a  The smaller rock-cut temple at Aboo-Simbel (Champollion writes it Ipsamboul), dedicated to Athor, whose symbol, the Cow, adorns the walls. The excavations reach a depth of 90 feet in the rock, but are lighted from the doorway only. They were done by order of Rameses the Great, whose oval occurs on each door-post. This appears to have been the limit of the great warrior's consquests. Four male, two female, deities stand sunk in the rock.
